2014
The fifth annual Hate Crime Awareness Day was a great success. Reports from Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge are available. As in the previous years, the event was during the week of the National Victims of Crime Awareness Week sponsored by the Federal Department of Justice. This year’s theme was "Taking Action".
2012
In 2012, community workshops took place in Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Calgary, Brooks, Lethbridge and Red Deer. Edmonton’s community workshops engaged the Edmonton Police Service Chief’s Advisory Committee and stakeholders in the community in a reflection and planning session.
2011
In 2011, the theme was The Impact of Hate Crime and Incidents on Victims and Communities, and featured public education on what resources are available in communities to support victims, the differential effects of hate crime on diverse target groups as compared to other types of crimes, and a discussion of what further community-specific resources or supports might be required to support vulnerable communities.
The Alberta Hate Crime Report 2008 provides base-line hate crime data, including statistics. The purpose of the report is to develop a mechanism to encourage standardized data collection and reporting on these types of socially divisive crimes, to raise awareness of their prevalence in the community and among policing agencies, and to establish a process to provide annual updates and,
over time, trend analysis.
2013
The fourth annual Hate Crimes Awareness Day took place during the 9th annual National Victims of Crimes Awareness Week. In 2013, the 4th annual Hate Crime Awareness Day took place on April 24. The theme for 2013 was ‘We all have a role’. See also City of Brooks media coverage of the event.
2015
The #STOPHATEAB Provincial Youth Forum, hosted by the Alberta Hate Crime Committee, will engage young people in responding to hate in Alberta. We would like to thank the Department of Justice, Government of Canada for their support to this forum as part of the National Victims of Crime Awareness Week.
2010 - Hate Crime Awareness Day
In 2010, the AHCC inaugurated a Hate Crime Awareness Day campaign on the first day of National Crime Prevention Week in Calgary, Lethbridge and Edmonton. In these three cities, organizers obtained a Mayor’s Proclamation and hosted various community events, which involved the participation of 150 to 200 people at each location. The 2010 theme for these events was What is Hate Crime and How Can Communities Respond?
